Choice of prepositions
Variability in the choice of prepositions
In my book entitled Benjamin Franklin’s English: Form to Function Analyses (Abingdon: Routledge, 2025), I have examined the choice between in behalf of and on behalf of and between in the street and on the street. Both are considered to differ between British and American English, but in Benjamin Franklin’s English, British versions are fairly extensively observed.
Range of different prepositions
In Benjamin Franklin’s English: Form to Function Analyses (Abingdon: Routledge, 2025), I also examined the constructions the verb suffer takes in the 18th century. The result shows that an extensive inventory of prepositions are used with this verb: from, under, by, through, etc.
