英語の否定に関する論文を11本収録した論文集です。扱う時代は、古英語から現代英語まで、前半には主に歴史的な視点から英語の否定構文を論じたもの、後半には方言の英語も含めて、現代英語における否定をさまざまな視点から論じた論考が収められています。

2003年に開催された日本英文学会のシンポジウムを土台にした論文集ですが、登壇者以外の方々からも多数寄稿していただきました。
