Yoko Iyeiri, Verbs of Implicit Negation and their Complements in the History of English (John Benjamins, 2010)
英語の補文を歴史の視点から
英語の補文（complementation）を、英語史の視点から調査分析しました。扱った動詞は、forbid, refuse, forbear, avoid, prohibit, prevent, hinder, refrain, fear, doubt, denyで、いずれも否定的な意味合いを含意する動詞です。
中英語期にthat節を従えていた動詞も、時代の変化とともにto不定詞や動名詞（-ing）を従えるようになることが少なくありません。本書では、例外があることを認めながらも、変化にはある種の方向性があることを指摘します。G. Rohdenburgが提唱するGreat Complement Shiftを応用して、First Complement Shift, Second Complement Shiftという用語を導入しました。
Chapterを分けて、不定詞を従える傾向が強い動詞、動名詞を従える傾向が強い動詞、前置詞付き動名詞を従える傾向が強い動詞、従属節を従える傾向が強い動詞を議論しました。その多くが過去にはthat節を従えていたことがわかります。また現在、さらなる変化を続けている動詞もあります。Forbidの現代英語における変化については、「関連する論文等」のところをご覧ください。
