中英語期(1100年頃~1500年頃)に大きな変化をとげた否定構文

スコットランドのセント・アンドルーズ大学に提出した博士論文(“Negative Constructions in Selected Middle English Verse Texts”)をもとに、更にその後の研究結果を加えて一冊の本に仕上げたものです。博士論文では、中英語(1100年頃から1500年頃の英語)の韻文作品における否定構文の変遷を扱いました。本書は、その後の研究で扱った中英語期の散文作品についての考察も含まれています。

中英語期の否定構文の大きな変化の流れについては第2章で、否定構文の選択が統語条件によって大きく変わってくる点については、第5章で詳しく扱いました。一つの文中で互いに打ち消し合うことのない否定語が複数現れる多重否定も中英語では重要な現象です。多重否定については、第6章で扱いました。
